The Company of Latin Sails, with its leudo La Zigoela, is dedicated to the noble task of preserving an ancient navigation technique, offering the opportunity to immerse oneself in the maritime experience like the sailors of yesteryear.
Launched in Livorno in 1998, the leudo La Zigoela is the fruit of the skilful hands of master carpenter Mario Cecchi.
This boat, modern but steeped in antique flavour, plays the role of ambassador for the Company of Latin Sails, founded in La Spezia by Roberto Bertonati. The clear and tangible objective is to safeguard and spread the rich Ligurian seafaring tradition and culture. Always active in the area, La Zigoela regularly appears in various cultural events along the Riviera, bringing with it the heritage of the past and a passion for the sea.

Founded in 2004, the Company of Latin Sails La Spezia is passionately committed to preserving and promoting the tradition of lateen sails, embodied in the striking leudi. This non-profit association stands out for its commitment to safeguarding the historical heritage of wooden boats. One of its main objectives is to support the restoration and recovery of vintage lateen or traditional sail boats.
It also organises cultural and sporting events related to nautical and maritime activities, promoting initiatives aimed at knowledge and conservation of the territory and the environment.
The leudo La Zigoela, symbol of the association, plays an important role in the dissemination and knowledge of the Golfo dei Poeti and the Cinque Terre. Offering engaging experiences and inclusive educational activities for children and the disabled, La Zigoela invites guests to discover the enchanting Ligurian coastline, local flavours and the rich culture of the villages.
For years, La Zigoela has held authorisation No. 1, which allows it to carry out 'Educational and naturalistic dissemination activities within the Marine Protected Area of the Cinque Terre National Park'.
Its main commitments include:
Educating people to respect the ecosystem, with particular attention to the Cetacean Sanctuary, through initiatives such as plastic clean-up days at sea, aimed at raising awareness among the younger generations.
Promoting local traditions in mussel and oyster farming, preserving and handing down a centuries-old activity that represents an indigenous production passed down from generation to generation.
